There are many botanical gardens in Barbados and we were able to get to one, spending a lovely hour or so in what had been a collapsed cave within a sugar plantation now turned into a garden as a labour of love by one Mr. Anthony Hunte. He still resides in an ancient house, originally the plantation's stable block, whimsically decorated with outdoor dining rooms and salons, sitting in state to chat to whoever comes by.
The garden is lovely filled with orchids and vines and ferns and flowers that bloom all year round, making use of thousands of pots of varying decay. These are the plants that sit dusty in sitting rooms and conservatories at home, here resplendent in colour and health. No need to pass a damp cloth on these leaves every once in a while, they are shiny and luminous.
What I particularly loved were all the
little sitting nooks placed where and there, hidden among clumps and dips at
the bottom of the space, one little level sections climbing on 3 sides around,
and on top providing a wonderful view. You could have your morning coffee or
afternoon tea in a different spot everyday for at least 3 weeks before sitting
in the same seat twice.
