Local travel

We like to get on the ground and travel by foot as much as possible. and if we need to go further afield we take local buses.

In Barbados, the buses are much used and are sometimes crammed to bursting. Bus stops indicate whether the bus is headed "to city" which is Bridgetown, or "out of city" which is anywhere else. The little bus stops are huts, with women's names affixed to each. The closest one to our accommodation is named "Hannah". We got quite attached to Hannah.

There are few roads and all of them get busy at school time, work time, finishing time, and evening event time. We seemed to have time our trips on all those times, and budged along slowly.

Government buses (blue with a yellow stripe) we never did see. We found ourselves sometimes on the bright yellow (with a blue stripe) private buses, and sometimes on what the locals call reggae buses, which are white vans with a red stripe and which seem to take vehicle occupancy limits as a starting point. The music is loud. There is a lot of jostling and laughter. Good thing we have no timetable.
